This is Stevie, a young pangolin rescued from illegal wildlife trafficking in South Africa during a 2022 sting operation, with the help of photographer and conservationist Gareth Thomas and African Pangolin Conservation.
When he was confiscated, Stevie was severely dehydrated and underweight, but the dedicated team at Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital carefully nursed him back to health.
He was later released into a protected natural habitat at Manyoni Private Game Reserve, where he is now thriving.
Stevie’s journey is a powerful conservation success story — proof of what’s possible when law enforcement, vets, rehabilitators, and volunteers work together to give trafficked wildlife a second chance.
If you haven’t watched Kulu’s Journey on Netflix, it’s truly extraordinary and a testament to Gareth’s passion and dedication to conservation.
“@maverick_gareth, thank you for allowing me to recreate your image of Stevie — I hope I’ve done him justice” - Fiona Goldthorpe
